James Abbe

Louise Brooks 1929

James Abbe (July 17, 1883 - November 11. 1975) was an American photographer. Abbe became known for taking many photographs of theater and movie performers starting in 1917.
In late 1920's he gained a reputation in news photography. He was also known for his fashion photography. In 1924 he had his photographs published in such journals as Harpers Bazaar, L'Illustration, Vanity Fair, Vogue and Vu.
He photographed film stars and the Moulin Rouge in Paris and also produced fashion pictures, such as Natasha Rambova in Fortuny Gown in 1924.

His well-mannered work for American Vogue represented what Alexander Liberman called '... an underlying dream of world where people act and behave in a civilized manner.'

In 1995, many years after his death, he received a major retrospective show at the National Portrait Gallery in London.

This photograph seizes the essence of mid-1920s eveningwear - a plumb line dress, possibly by Lanvin or Patou, in filmy, sensuous fabric trimmed with fringed tiers.
